DaVinci Resolve audio sync not working? 8 fixes
Resolve's waveform sync is handy, but when it fails it usually gives you no reason. These are the most common causes, roughly in the order worth checking.
1. The camera has no usable scratch audio
Waveform sync compares the camera's own sound with the recorder's. If the camera's microphone was off, muted or turned right down, there's nothing to match. Check that each camera clip has audible sound.
2. The useful sound is on a different channel
Cameras with four or more audio channels often have silent or noise-only channels. If Resolve analyses those, the match fails. Try disabling the empty channels in the clip's attributes, or use a tool that checks each channel separately.
3. The clips don't actually overlap
Two clips can only be matched if they recorded the same moment. A camera clip from before the recorder started can't be matched to it. Check the clips' recording times.
4. Too many clips selected at once
Auto Sync Audio works best on a camera clip and its matching audio. Selecting a whole shoot at once can produce wrong or missing matches. Work in smaller groups, or use a tool built for whole shoots.
5. Very long recordings
An hour-long recorder file with dozens of short camera clips inside it is hard to match. A two-step approach helps: find roughly where each clip belongs, then fine-tune. SyncNut does this automatically.
6. Noisy or very different sound
A camera at the back of a loud room and a lav on the speaker can sound very different. Wind noise, music and crowd noise also confuse matching. Try a camera with a clearer microphone, or match against a different recorder that shares more sound.
7. It synced, but drifts later
Devices run at very slightly different speeds. A long take can be in sync at the start and a few frames out at the end. Check the end of long takes, and split and resync if needed.
8. Some clips sync, some don't
On a big shoot, a single failed match means nudging by hand. With SyncNut, a camera that never overlaps your main recorder can still sync through any clip it does overlap, and clips that share no sound at all are placed by their camera's clock and flagged for you to check.
A faster way for big shoots
Put every clip on a timeline with one track per camera, export it as AAF (File › Export › Timeline…), and sync it in SyncNut. The synced timeline comes back with every clip linked. The SyncNut troubleshooting section covers its own error messages.
Questions
Why does DaVinci Resolve say it can't sync audio?
The usual causes are missing or very quiet scratch audio on the camera, the microphone being on a different channel, clips that don't overlap in time, or too many clips selected at once.
How do I fix audio drift in DaVinci Resolve?
Sync at the start of the take, check the end, and if it has drifted, split the clip and resync the second part. For long recordings, a tool that measures drift will tell you how much to expect.
