How to sync multicam footage in DaVinci Resolve by audio

If you filmed with more than one camera, or recorded sound separately, every clip has to be lined up before you can cut between angles. Here are the three ways to do it in DaVinci Resolve, and when each one works best.

The short answer

Method 1: Sync by timecode

If every camera and recorder was jammed to the same timecode source, Resolve can line them up with no analysis at all.

  1. Import all clips into the Media Pool.
  2. Select the clips, right-click and choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips…
  3. Set Angle Sync to Timecode and click Create.

This only works when timecode was actually shared. Cameras running free-run or time-of-day timecode that was never synced will drift apart by seconds or minutes.

Method 2: Resolve's built-in sound sync

Resolve can also match clips by their audio waveform.

  1. Select the clips from every camera in the Media Pool.
  2. Right-click, choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips…
  3. Set Angle Sync to Sound and click Create.

For a single camera plus a separate recorder, you can also select both clips and use Auto Sync Audio › Based on Waveform; see syncing external audio.

This works well for short shoots with one continuous recording per camera. It tends to struggle when a camera has many separate clips, when recordings start hours apart, when some clips have no sound, or when a camera records several audio channels and only one of them has the useful microphone. Then you're left nudging clips by hand.

Method 3: Automatic waveform sync for big shoots

For interviews, podcasts, events and weddings, where every device stopped and started many times, a dedicated waveform-sync tool saves the most time. With SyncNut the workflow stays inside Resolve:

  1. Put all your clips on a new timeline, one track per camera or recorder. Order and position don't matter.
  2. Choose File › Export › Timeline… and save it as AAF.
  3. Open SyncNut, load the AAF and choose your footage folder.
  4. Click Sync, download the synced AAF, and bring it back with File › Import › Timeline…

Every clip is matched by sound to a fraction of a frame, takes are laid back to back in recording order, and the timeline opens with all media already linked. From there you can create a multicam clip or cut directly.

Questions

Can DaVinci Resolve sync multiple cameras by audio?

Yes. Select the clips, choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips, and set Angle Sync to Sound. It works best with one continuous recording per camera; shoots with many clips per camera are easier with a dedicated waveform-sync tool.

How do I sync multicam footage without timecode?

Sync by audio waveform. Every camera needs some recorded sound, even a built-in microphone. Resolve's Sound angle sync or a tool like SyncNut matches the waveforms and lines the clips up.

Is there a free way to sync many clips at once for Resolve?

SyncNut is free during early access. You export your timeline from Resolve as AAF, sync it in the browser, and import the synced AAF back into Resolve.

Try itSyncNut syncs every camera and recorder on your Resolve timeline by sound, in your browser. It's free during early access and nothing is uploaded. See the step-by-step docs or more guides.
